I am so grateful
I’m so grateful you are here.
My name is Mark Liebenow and I’m a creative nonfiction writer and poet who lives in Peoria, Illinois. I write about prostate cancer, nature, grief, and the wisdom of holy fools. I’m the author of four books, and my essays, poems, and critical reviews have been published in numerous literary journals. My account of hiking in Yosemite to deal with my wife Evelyn’s death, Mountains of Light, was published by the University of Nebraska Press. Until cancer treatments took my strength away, I often helped my friends on their organic seed farm. I studied English at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and creative nonfiction at Bradley University.

Why is Dissolving Mountains the name of this site?
Most of us are terrified of cancer, and when the doctor says we have cancer, we are sure we are going to die. Yet, if our cancer is caught early, a cure is possible for most of us. And even if it’s caught somewhere in its later stages, enough therapies and targeting drugs have come out of cancer research to keep us alive for a long time.
What I hope to do with you is dissolve the mountains of fear that surround cancer, and build up a community of supportive people who understand cancer.
